Basic 1–6 - (Ages 6–12 Years)
The Basic School years are an important period of intellectual, social, emotional, and physical development. At Dela Montessori School, children transition from early exploration toward greater independence, responsibility, critical thinking, and academic confidence.
Our Basic 1–6 programme combines Montessori education with the Ghana Education Service curriculum. Children learn through hands-on experiences, academic instruction, research, practical activities, collaborative projects, and real-world applications.
Learning Areas
Mathematics
Children develop a deep understanding of mathematical concepts through hands-on Montessori materials. Learning progresses from concrete experiences to abstract thinking, covering place value, operations, fractions, geometry, and problem-solving in a logical and engaging way.
English Language
Students develop reading, writing, speaking, listening, vocabulary, spelling, grammar, comprehension, and creative expression. Literature, discussions, presentations, and writing activities help children communicate confidently and develop a love for reading.
Science
Science encourages children to observe, question, investigate, experiment, and discover. Students explore living things, the human body, matter, energy, the environment, weather, forces, and other scientific concepts while developing skills in observation, experimentation, recording, and analysis.
Religious and Moral Education
Students explore religious beliefs, moral principles, relationships, responsibility, and peaceful coexistence. The programme promotes values including honesty, kindness, respect, compassion, integrity, and responsibility.
Creative Arts
Students develop creativity and self-expression through drawing, painting, crafts, modelling, music, drama, movement, and other creative activities. They explore different materials and techniques while developing coordination, confidence, imagination, and appreciation of Ghanaian and global culture.
History
Students explore Ghana's history, traditional societies, important personalities, cultural heritage, significant events, and major developments in world history. Stories, timelines, research, and projects help children understand how the past influences the present..
Computing
Students develop digital literacy and learn to use technology confidently, creatively, safely, and responsibly. Learning includes computer skills, word processing, presentations, research, digital creativity, computational thinking, and introductory programming.
Asante Twi
Students develop listening, speaking, reading, writing, and vocabulary skills in Asante Twi while exploring Ghanaian stories, proverbs, songs, expressions, traditions, and cultural practices.
French
Students develop foundational French communication skills through listening, speaking, reading, writing, songs, stories, games, conversations, and interactive activities.
Integrated Learning
At Dela Montessori School, subjects are not viewed as isolated areas of knowledge. Children are encouraged to connect ideas across disciplines.
A science project may incorporate mathematics and computing; a history project may involve English, Creative Arts, and Asante Twi; while practical projects may combine research, creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving.
This approach helps children understand that learning is connected, practical, and relevant to real life.
